A PirateCon is a special type of pirate event:
- It is nothing more complicated that an opportunity to have fun with a large group of people dressed as pirates and is not to be taken seriously
- No-one owns PirateCon so you don't need our or anyone else's permission to call your event a "PirateCon"
- If you don't dress up you can't really join in, but you don't have to dress up as a pirate - any pirate-related costume will be ok. See the Provisions page for info & supplies
- A PirateCon is usually for adults only. The sight of a crowd of jolly pirates may be hugely entertaining for children but the midst of it is no place for them
- You should try to talk like a pirate (see the Lore page) but for PirateCon you only need to sound like a pirate which simply means saying "Arrr" more or less constantly
- A PirateCon is usually an informal public gathering and, while some pirates will have taken the initiative to organize it, you are responsible for your own actions
- PirateCon is intended to foster a sense of community. It is not a case of "every man for himself" so please do your part to help keep the crew together and on course
Note that in the context of PirateCon at least, a "pirate" is someone who celebrates freedom. This means no actual acts of piracy, plundering, slitting throats etc. However, carousing and wenching are not only acceptable but postively encouraged, arrr.
Cap'ns
("Captains" - this be ye who're organizin' & leadin') - 'ere be some tips fer ye...- Set a date & start location. Many PirateCons occur on or around September 19th because this is International Talk Like A Pirate Day but it can be any day you like
- Invite plenty of pirates (a Facebook event can be good for this)
- Plan the route & activities
- Keep yer crew on course (a megaphone really helps with this)
- Make sure you tell us 'ere at PirateCon.info the date, location and web-address for your event so we can help promote it by including it in the list on the main page.
Crew
(this be everyone taking part) - 'ere be some tips fer ye...- Say "Arrr" continuously - no hearty band of seafarin' scoundrels should e'er be silent and "Arrr" should be the constant background sound at every PirateCon
- Group "Arrr" - when someone in the crew says "Arrr" loudly everyone in the crew must respond with a loud "Arrr" (this should happen often, especially in bars)
- Have a pirate name - "<Color>beard" is a good choice, especially if you don't have a beard
- "Matey/Lass" is how ye address individual men/women (so you don't need to remember their pirate names)
- "Me hearties" is how ye needs be addressin' yer fellow pirates collectively
- Drink rum or beer - it's PirateCon fer land sakes!
- Pay with cash and tip generously - it saves time and cultivates goodwill so we'll be welcome back next time
"[?]arrr"
if ye be wantin' t' say more than "Arrr"'ere be some tips fer ye...If ye can't be botherin' t'learn authentic pirate sayings and nautical terminology, simply expand on "Arrr" as follows:
| English | Authentic | PirateCon |
| ... ye gets the idea | ||
| Yes | Aye | Yarrr |
| No | Nay | Narrr |
| Car | 'orseless carriage | Carrr |
| Floor | Deck | Flarrr |
| Door | Door | Darrr |
Note that "booty" in authentic pirate speak means money/treasure, but in PirateCon speak it means booty.
